Inaugural Sikh Environment Day -March 14

First Official Worldwide Sikh Environmental Day

Sikhs around the world have been invited to participate in the first official Sikh Environmental Day on March 14th. The date for Sikh Environmental Day was chosen in honour of  Guru Har Rai Ji. Guru Har Rai Ji became Guru on March 14, 1644, and preached that Sikhs must protect the well being of plants and animals. He is remembered in Sikh history for
his deep sensitivity to nature and its preservation.

The Sikh Council on Religion and Education (SCORE) initiated the celebration to “provide an opportunity to reflect upon our relationship with nature and mark a day on which we commit to environmental activism.”
Sikhs are encouraged to participate in environmental activities at home and at their gurdwaras (places of worship) on Sikh Environmet Day.
Prabhjit Banga posted the following suggested activities on the Ecoaction teams blog ecoblogist:
  • Visit parks and nature reserves for reflection and meditation
  • Sing hymns with environmental themes
  • Organize a tree planting event in your community
  • Encourage your temple to go green by using EcoSikh’s Gudwara Guide
  • Go for a walk in nature with your friends or family
  • Install an environmental notice board in your temple
  • Make this week’s langar (free food at the temple) from all organic and local ingredients
  • Screen a film at your temple to create awareness about environmental issues
  • Join the EcoSikh campaign and register your event.
Please visit the original article by Prabhjit Banga to access links that can help you understand, or join in the celebrations.

I hope the I reblogged this correctly. I would not want to offend anyone by mistake. Ideally, it would be nice to have a representative from each political party, religion, and viewpoint post important events like this. If you would like to post an occasional guest blog, or post on a regular basis, please let me know.
