Placing venues, businesses, parks, and landscape features in the correct location on internet maps has been personal hobby of Suzanne’s for over four years. When Google Map Maker officially opened its doors to Canada this year, Suzanne was entering the location of the Omemee boat launch to be included in the Omemee Pigeon eFlyer.

‘Many places in our rural area, lack proper online maps and directions,’ Suzanne shared, adding ’As long-time village residents,we frequently received calls asking for directions to businesses, churches, and parks. When I founded Omemee Pigeon eFlyer,it was a natural extension to include maps.’

Canadian Google Map Makers Impacting Canadian Economy

Google Map Maker now being open to Canadians, can have a large effect on the Canadian economy. What this means for us as a country is that edits, and new submissions to Google maps will take much less time for approval. This can directly impact the Canadian economy as a whole,as people are able to find the correct locations for tourist activities, shopping, and more.

‘Google Map Maker being open to Canadians, has financially helped some local groups already,’shared Suzanne Sholer, editor of Omemee Pigeon eFlyer, adding ’One of our most rewarding additions to Google maps has been Freedom Valley Horse Rescue. It’s good to see a worthy cause getting the assistance it needs.’

Canadian Google Map Maker Connecting Canadians

Google Map Maker, being open to Canadians, also connects Canadians online in new ways. Prior to Google Map Maker being open to Canadians, edits made to Canadian maps were simply approved- or not, by map makers outside Canada. There was little discussion, and sometimes valid corrections were disapproved by people unfamiliar with a region. Now Canadian Map Makers can connect with each other,to help speed the process of edits being accepted. Suzanne hopes more Canadians will take an interest in mapping our great country.

‘For Google Map Maker edits to be accepted, they must ne approved by other Google Map Makers.’ Suzanne shared adding,’If we could get a few more local people involved in editing Google Maps, it could really speed up the process.’

Google Map Maker – Natural Educational Extension

Google Map Maker, has long been used as an adjunct to courses in the United States and the UK. Ms. Sholer, a teacher on leave from Toronto Board of Education, sees great potential for Canadian Colleges, and Universities to participate in the Canadian Google Map Maker program.

Here is an excerpt from the Official letter of recognition from Google Map Maker

Hi Google Map Maker!
We’re with the Google Map Maker community team and wanted to introduce ourselves to you. You’re one of the top mappers in Canada since last month’s Google Map Maker launch for Canadian editing, and we’re dedicated to supporting avid mapping users like you.
We’d be delighted to send you a gift from Google Map Maker based on the great mapping you’re doing!
Also, we’d love to find out more about your interest in mapping. Could you take just a moment to fill out this very brief form, sharing with us what excites you about mapping?
Finally, we warmly welcome you to join the North American Map Maker forum to interact with other mappers working on the North American region. We also recommend you visit the Map Maker Community, learn more about the application and introduce yourself to other members. You can find more information about our team on this page.
Welcome and happy mapping!
Warm regards,
The Prime Minister has made it clear he regards the determination of Canadians to oppose oil tankers on the BC coast and piping bitumen crude out to the US or China as anti-Canadian activity.

The attack has included demonizing charities receiving money from US charities to oppose the pollution of Big Oil. For years, Canadians have donated generously to protect the Amazon or to save rare tigers. But when other countries’ citizens donate to help Canadians protect our precious eco-systems, Stephen Harper acts as though the effort is a threat to national security.

The tactics of the Harper Conservatives are chilling. They combine suppression of dissent, with conflating the “public interest” with the profits of foreign oil companies. We need to speak out clearly. The national interest requires addressing the climate crisis, establishing energy security and diversifying energy sources.

As the only elected leader of an Opposition party in the House of Commons, I am very grateful for your help. Support now will help us spread the word and improve our ability to get the word out at the grassroots.

Please take a moment to donate time (go to www.keepkyoto.ca/en to sign the petition) or write letters to the editors of newspapers across Canada.

Do not lose heart. We may be in the fight of our lives, but we can revive democracy. We can restore Canada to the place of respect in the world which we once held. It is possible to mobilize effectively and force a change in the dangerous course Stephen Harper has set for our nation.

Many thanks for your continued support.

VANCOUVER, January 27, 2012 — As a result of federal and provincial investments in affordable housing, a new program is available to help low-income seniors and people with disabilities finance home modifications for accessible, safe and independent living.

Through a $15 million combined investment over the next three years, the Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program will provide eligible homeowners and landlords with financial assistance of up to $20,000 per home, in the form of a forgivable loan. Funding for the program is shared equally by the federal and provincial governments.

“Our government is working hard to improve the lives of seniors and persons with disabilities,” said the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Minister Responsible for British Columbia on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). “Through the new Home Adaptations for Independence program, our government is working with the Province of British Columbia to develop and implement solutions to housing.”

“The funding will help people living with a disability retain their independence and improve their quality of life,” said Rich Coleman, Minister of Energy and Mines and Minister Responsible for Housing. “This partnership with the federal government will go a long way to help low-income seniors and people with disabilities create a home for themselves that is comfortable, safe and accessible.”

Eligible renovations and retrofits include handrails in hallways or stairways, ramps for ease of access, easy to reach work areas in the kitchen or bath-tub grab bars and seats. All adaptations should be permanent and fixed to the home, except for equipment designed to give access to existing parts of the home such as bath lifts.

The HAFI program was made possible following the signing, in July 2011, of a new Canada – BC affordable housing agreement. The Government of Canada and the Province of B.C. are contributing equally over three years to fund provincially-designed and delivered programs that support a range of housing needs for low-income individuals, families and seniors. This program will provide assistance to B.C. residents who wish to make adaptations and remain in their own home. The combined investment of $180 million will support housing programs that help B.C. residents’ access safe, affordable housing.

The Government of Canada, through CMHC, will invest more than $2 billion in housing this year. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of almost 615,000 households living in existing social housing. In British Columbia, this represents some 71,000 households. These investments are improving the quality of life for low-income Canadians and households living in existing social housing, including individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, seniors, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and Aboriginal people.

Over the last decade, the Province has invested $2.8 billion to provide affordable housing for low-income individuals, seniors and families. This investment has helped create close to 21,000 new units of affordable housing — and almost doubled the number of households who qualify for assistance. This year, the Province will invest approximately half a billion dollars in a diverse range of social housing programs to help more than 95,000 people keep the cost of housing more affordable in British Columbia.

More information on the program is available at: www.bchousing.org/HAFI.

CMHC has been Canada’s national housing agency for more than 65 years. CMHC is committed to helping Canadians access a wide choice of quality, environmentally sustainable, affordable housing solutions, while making vibrant, healthy communities and cities a reality across the country.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09216860103143263681noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2768149563713416175.post-90252310940009275792012-01-25T20:44:00.000-08:002012-01-25T20:44:00.234-08:00Home Ownership Is Better Buying Better?
Handy Online calculator!

With Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation announcing numerous housing starts across the country, uou may be thinking abbot owning your own home.Thinking about buying a home? Industry Canada offers the following useful tips, and a FREE smart investment calculator which can help you decide whether buying or renting a home is a better deal for you.

While there are many advantages to buying a home, such as the ability to accumulate an asset that may increase in value over time, security of tenure, and the ability to renovate or change your home to meet your needs; it’s important to be sure you can afford to make the move from renting to home ownership.

Using the Rent or Buy a Home Calculator

Using the Rent or Buy a Home Calculator is easy! Just input the following figures:

Funds Available -Your savings for a down payment and closing costs.
Current Rent - the amount you can afford for housing costs, including utilities, each month.
Interest Rate

Click 'Submit' and the price of a home you might ba able to afford, will be calculated.

The Smart Investment calculator only estimates the cost of closing and monthly utilities. Actual costs may differ. If you are considering buying an existing home, ask the realtor, lawyer or banker for the utility bills for the last year or so, if they are not provided with the listing. This can give you a more accurate idea at what the utility costs may be.

Additional Home Ownership Expenses

Buying a home for the first time, may entail many other expenses such as purchasing appliances, gardening equipment and additional furniture, etc.
If purchasing a newly built home, you may also have additional expenses such as fencing and landscaping.
Consider costs of repairs or renovations when buying a home. This is one reason it is always important to have a home inspection done on the house you are planning to buy. It can give you a good idea of the costs that lie ahead in the early years of ownership, like a furnace, windows or a roof that may need to be replaced.
Thinking of buying a condominium? Be sure you budget for any condominium fees.
While the housing market in Canada has been very robust and house prices have been increasing in most regions, it’s important to understand there is no guarantee that the housing market will remain the same over the long term.
For more information see the housing section of the Canadian Consumer Handbook.

Resources:

Rent or Buy Calculator
House Image from Open ClipArt by purzen

YrHelper Infonuthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15764242355179044602noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2768149563713416175.post-2085426607924239342012-01-06T19:09:00.001-08:002012-01-06T19:09:03.608-08:00Anti-Bullying CD -- Grammy Nominee!
All About Bullies Raises funds For PACER National Center for Bullying Prevention!

For the second year in a row,Ken Cowle of Soul Asylum, Ontario, Canada has received a Grammy nomination for his collaboration on a children's CD. 'All About Bullies ... Big and Small', edged out more than 125 other children’s album to make the shortlist.
All About Bullies, a unique mix of stories and songs, is a fun, informative and inspirational tool kit for children to deal with the playground and cyber bullying. The CD deals with everything from cyber bullies, to kids with humorous courage, to kids viewing their lives through bicycles, each 'child' on the CD finds a way to change their perspective, or to accept other children for who they are.
All About Bullies, not only gives advice to children being bullied, but it also speaks to the bully, and tries to address possible reasons why some kids feel compelled to use their strength or power to intimidate or harm others. All of the profits from the CD will be donated to the PACER National Center for Bullying Prevention based in Minneapolis, Minn.
Prior to being asked to participate, publisher Ken Cowle of Soul Asylum Poetry and Publishing, had been talking with Texas-based band Blue October for Soul Asylum’s radio show, and had written several poems on the subject of bullying. Mr. Cowle, jumped at the chance to collaborate on a CD about bullying, having experienced bullying first-hand in his younger years.
Ken worked several months with Steve Pullara of Cool Beans Music and other producers on the project, helping secure the rights for use of the Blue October song, Jump Rope, on the compilation disc, and also received an artist’s credit on the CD for co-writing the track, 'Where are Ya', with Mr. Pullara.
Despite the subject matter, the collection is light-hearted, easy to listen to, groovy and eclectic, with a few tongue in cheek moments thrown in for the adults. For example, actress Heidi Swedberg, best known as the ill-fated, wedding-bound, invitation label-licking girlfriend of Seinfeld’s George Costanza narrates 'Labels' a poem discussing how labels are best used for cans of pickles and beans, rather than people.

The calibre and scope of the project, as well as the involvement of recognized Philadelphia-area producers Jim Cravero, Pat Robinson, Kevin Mackie and Gloria Domina, made Mr. Cowle’s second collaboration on a children’s CD an easy decision.

The roster of artists on "’All About Bullies...Big and Small’ includes members of Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street Band, international recording artists, several Philadelphia radio personalities, Ms Swedberg and the Sugar Free Allstars & Secret Agent 23 Skidoo.
Ken Cowle is marking the days till the 54th Grammy award ceremony set to take place Feb. 12 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where 'All About Bullies' will compete against 'Are We There Yet?' by The Papa Hugs Band, 'Fitness Rock & Roll' by Miss Amy, 'GulfAlive' by The Banana Plant and 'I Love: Tom T. Hall’s Songs Of Fox Hollow' by Various Artists.

To sample tracks from the CD and to read reviews, visit allaboutbulliesbigandsmall.com For more information on the centre against bullying, visit pacerkidsagainstbullying.org Visit soulasylumpoetry.com for upcoming events, industry newsletters and information on its roster of artists.
YrHelper Infonuthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15764242355179044602noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2768149563713416175.post-61190441777864069632012-01-03T09:46:00.000-08:002012-01-03T09:46:02.203-08:00Gung Hey Fat Choy! JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, December 14, 2011 — Today the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador announced the completion of a $495,000 reconfiguration housing project on Mundy Pond Road in St. John’s. A six-bedroom duplex has been remodelled into four, one-bedroom apartments for single adults living on low-income.
The equally cost-shared federal and provincial funding for this current project was allocated through the Affordable Housing Trust fund ($383,000) and Canada’s Economic Action Plan: Renovation and Retrofit of Social Housing ($112,000). This is the second reconfiguration project undertaken by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) as part of an innovative pilot project aimed at meeting the changing demographic need for social housing, particularly in urban centres through the restructuring of existing social housing properties.

“The Government of Canada is proud to have been a partner in the renovation and retrofit of these apartments,” said the Honourable Peter Penashue, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). “With the completion of the work, low-income individuals can now access affordable rental housing that meets their needs”.

“I am delighted to announce the completion of this second reconfiguration project — these homes will definitely improve the ability to meet the changing and challenging housing needs of smaller families and single adults through our existing provincial social housing portfolio,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “For some time now we have been looking for innovative ways to achieve this goal, and we would like to see more of these conversions undertaken because they do make a positive difference.”

Provincial Government Invested $1 million R and D Funds

The provincial government invested $1 million to research and develop options to address the changing demographic need for social housing. The goal is to restructure under-used units into homes that meet the demographic need for smaller homes, and in the process, to yield at least one additional unit within the same space. Similarly in Corner Brook, NLHC remodelled a duplex on Wheeler’s Road into three one- and two-bedroom apartments. Both reconfiguration projects were undertaken in low-density neighbourhoods with consideration for suitable parking and access.
Federal Government five-year investment- more than $1.9 billion

In September 2008, the Government of Canada committed to a five-year investment of more than $1.9 billion in housing and homelessness to address the needs of low-income Canadians, those at risk of homelessness, and the homeless. This included a two-year renewal of the Affordable Housing Initiative and renovation programs until March 31, 2011 with a commitment to consult on the use of the investments for the 2011 – 2014 period. The initial phase of the Canada’s Economic Action Plan built on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing, plus $2 billion in low-cost loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.
The Government of Canada wants to improve the quality of existing social housing for low-income seniors, single parent families, recent immigrants and Aboriginal households. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provided $850 million to provinces and territories for the renovation and retrofit of existing social housing.
Federal and Provincial Cost-shared Affordable Housing Agreement

On August 16, 2011, the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador signed a new $41-million cost-shared affordable housing agreement. Funding under the new Agreement for Investment in Affordable Housing 2011 – 2014 will continue to reduce the number of households in housing need.
To find out more about how the Government of Canada, through CMHC, is working to build stronger homes and communities for all Canadians, call CMHC at 1-800-668-2642 or visit www.cmhc.ca/housingactionplan. Google Mapmaker Opens to Canada!
Get Your Google Map on Canada!

Google Mapmaker opened its virtual doors to Canada October 24,2011. Previously,Google mapmaker was open to the USA,but not Canada, making the turnaround times for Canadian cartographers longer, especially for those living in places 'off the beaten path'. With the opening of Google Mapmaker to Canada, USA Google Mapmaker members are anticipating an influx of Canadian Mapmakers into the system,Now users can add their expert local knowledge directly to Google Maps with Google Map Maker for Canada. To get your map edits approved faster, take part in voting on other people’s edits. Now that Canadians can take part in editing the map of Canada, I’m looking forward to getting some votes on some of my edits that are in pending status.Ready to start putting Canada on the map? If you’ve been submitting map edits for awhile, under a Google account, you’ll want to register with that account,as it tracks your edits, and now, also your reviews.Users can help make the map complete in many ways such as marking hiking paths and trails, fixing names of a local businesses, or adding college campus buildings so they appear in Google Maps. For something to be added to Google Mapmaker it needs to have a permanent physical address indicated, not the mailing address. If there are several outlets for a franchise, then the name should differentiate which one it is. For example ,one of my recent approved edits was Dunsford BR-City of Kawarau Lakes Library, which did not have the branch indicated previously. To confirm Map Maker user contributions are accurate, each edit is reviewed. If you would like your edits to be approved faster,be sure to take part in the community edits, and vote on whether other people’s edits are accurate After approval, edits appear in Google Maps within minutes. To see examples of what people all around the world are adding in Map Maker, you can even watch mapping in real-time.

Citizen cartographers using Google Map Maker in more than 180 other regions of the world help keep maps of their areas accurate and up to date. According to their information, the problem is not in a lack or food, but the distribution of food. Unstable food prices cause many problems ‘When food prices go up, more people go hungry, whether due to importing less, growing less, or earning less for what is grown.’

There are over 1 billion people living in chronic hunger, and by the time you finish reading this 2 children will have died of hunger. I urge you to take action,by signing the petition to end hunger, and finding out more about what you can do. If they could put a man on the moon,so many years ago,can we not bring an end to world hunger NOW? Where are our priorities?

Join the 3 million, and sign this petition to end hunger. Let's start looking at what is really important.

From Jacques Diouf, Director-General,Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
“Food prices – from crisis to stability” has been chosen as this year’s World Food Day theme to shed some light on a trend that is hurting the poor consumer, the small producer and agriculture in general. Food prices, which were stable for decades, have become increasingly volatile.
If we are to seriously address the issue of world hunger, more effort has to be made to address the problem of food price fluctuations, particularly for those who spend most of their incomes on food, to ensure that they can return from the market with enough for their families to eat nutritiously.

Food Price Instability Causes

The causes of food price instability are well known. However, counteracting this instability requires political will.

Food Price Instability - Climate Change Depletes Stock

The global food market is tight, with supply struggling to keep pace with demand and stocks are at or near historical lows. Droughts or floods hitting key producing regions squeeze prices further. Agriculture cannot respond fast enough with increased food production because of long-term under-investment in research, technology, equipment and infrastructure.
Food Price Instability-Increased Animal Feed Costs

Increased wealth means many people worldwide are eating more meat and dairy products, driving up the price of animal feed. Eighty million people are born every year, creating more demand for food.
Food Price Instability - Food Commodity Investments Distorting Trade Policies

A further contributing factor may be the recent entry of institutional investors with large sums of money into food commodity futures markets. In addition, distorting agricultural and protectionist trade policies bear a significant part of the blame.
Food Price Instability- Market Price Prediction Guessing Game for Farmers

At the level of net food-importing countries, price rises can hurt poor countries by making it much more expensive for them to import food for their people. Farmers are also affected because they badly need to know, months away, the price their crops will fetch at harvest time. If high prices are likely, they plant more. If low prices are forecast, they plant less and cut costs. Rapid price swings make that calculation much more difficult.

Food Price Instability - Solutions

Food Price Instability - Solution - Eliminate Agricultural Subsidies

Greater policy coordination in international food trade can reduce volatility by helping maintain an assured flow of goods. FAO supports the elimination of trade-distorting agricultural subsidies in rich countries.
Food Price Instability - Solution - Increase Futures Markets Transparency

On speculation, FAO’s research suggests that while this might not trigger price movements, it could exaggerate their size and duration. More and better information is needed to allow greater transparency in trade on futures markets. This would help ensure that governments and traders make informed decisions and avoid panic or irrational reactions.

Food Price Instability - Solution - Emergency Food Reserves

As to mitigating the effects of volatility on the poor, national or regional safety nets, possibly featuring emergency food reserves, can help assure food supplies to the needy during crises. Poor consumers can also be assisted with cash or food vouchers and farmers helped with inputs such as fertilizer and seeds.
Food Price Instability - Solution -Government Call Options

Various financial mechanisms can help governments protect consumers from food price increases. One example is call options, which would give governments the right to buy food at a set price even months ahead, regardless of how the market has moved in the meantime.
Food Price Instability - Solution - Increased Agricultural Investment

Ultimately though, stability in the food market depends on increased investment in agriculture, particularly in developing countries, where 98 percent of the hungry live and where food production needs to double by 2050 to feed growing populations.
On World Food Day 2011, let us reflect seriously at what causes swings in food prices, and articulate alternatives on what needs to be done at national, regional and global levels to reduce the impact on almost a billion people who do not have enough to eat.
Jacques Diouf
Director-General
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Food prices - from crisis to stability – 2011 Focus!

Resources:

1 Billion Hungry

Canadia Agriculture Museum
YrHelper Infonuthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15764242355179044602noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2768149563713416175.post-76717058939938512972011-09-11T12:50:00.000-07:002011-09-11T12:50:55.856-07:00Harper Expects Egypt to Uphold Israel Peace Treaty!According to a press release issued minutes ago by GTA Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, approximately 5,000 Egyptians attacked and broke into Cairo's Israeli embassy, Friday night,See the video coverage of the attack issued by the Associated press, and join in the Facebook conversation.
Sinai a staging ground for terrorist actions against Israel?

Press Release:GTA Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs

14:51 September 11, 2011

On Friday night, an Egyptian mob of an estimated 5,000 people attacked and broke into Cairo's Israeli embassy. Fortunately, the security guards survived inside the embassy 'safe room' and were eventually assisted by Egyptian commandos. Israel sent a plane to rescue other embassy staff, including the ambassador, Friday night.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, the advocacy arm of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and other Canadian Jewish Federations, condemns the attack. The Centre said that Egyptian authorities should reaffirm both their responsibilities under international law to protect Israeli diplomats in Egypt and their commitment to maintenance of the Israel-Egypt peace treaty.
'The Israel-Egypt peace treaty of 1979 is a cornerstone of Middle East stability, and the benchmark for Arab-Israel peace diplomacy,' said Centre board Chairman David Koschitzky. 'Its maintenance is important not only to Israel, but to all those worldwide who wish to see a long-term and stable process of broader Arab-Israeli reconciliation.'
'Like all Canadians, the Jewish community watched last winter's political changes in Egypt with a mixture of hope and concern,' continued Koschitzky. "The Israel-Egypt treaty has stood for more than thirty years. Maintaining it is critical to the international credibility and legitimacy of the new Egyptian government. To a great extent, the Egyptian revolution of the past year will be judged by its handling of its important relationship with Israel."
According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expressed appreciation to U.S. President Obama for his support, Egyptian commandos for their help and Egypt's Information Minister for condemning the attack, Israel will continue to adhere to the peace treaty with Egypt and Israel's ambassador will quickly return to Cairo.
Prime Minister Harper said that 'Canada expects Egypt to honour its commitment to uphold its international agreements – including its peace treaty with Israel.'
Noting Prime Minister Harper's statement, Centre CEO Shimon Fogel expressed his hope that Canada will use its diplomatic contacts with Egypt to reinforce this expectation, including proper Egyptian supervision over the Sinai Peninsula which borders both Egypt and Israel. 'The Sinai must not become a staging ground for terrorist actions against Israel,' he said.
Fogel went on to note that Egyptian state-controlled media regularly broadcasts material that incites hatred of Jews and Israelis. 'The broadcast of anti-Semitic and inflammatory material encourages violent incidents like the one we saw Friday,' added Fogel. 'Canada can use its influence with Egypt to encourage a change in this policy.'

Jack Layton – Last Words Inspiring Canadians-
Regardless of political affiliation, across Canada - we mourn the loss of Jack Layton: father, husband, friend, and leader of the New Democrat Party.Early this morning, Jack Layton lost his second battle with cancer. According to a statement issued by his partner NDP MP Olivia Chow, and his children Sarah and Michael;

The Honourable Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, passed away at 4:45 am today, Monday August 22. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. Details of Mr. Layton’s funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
In accordance with Jack's wishes we are publishing the letter he wrote to Canadians to be released in the eventuality of his death. Jack Layton's Final Words for Canadians
Dear Friends, Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination. Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue. I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected. I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election. A few additional thoughts: To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don't be discouraged that my own journey hasn't gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer. To the members of my party: we've done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let's continue to move forward. Let's demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government. To the members of our parliamentary caucus: I have been privileged to work with each and every one of you. Our caucus meetings were always the highlight of my week. It has been my role to ask a great deal from you. And now I am going to do so again. Canadians will be closely watching you in the months to come. Colleagues, I know you will make the tens of thousands of members of our party proud of you by demonstrating the same seamless teamwork and solidarity that has earned us the confidence of millions of Canadians in the recent election. To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision. You decided that the way to replace Canada's Conservative federal government with something better was by working together in partnership with progressive-minded Canadians across the country. You made the right decision then; it is still the right decision today; and it will be the right decision right through to the next election, when we will succeed, together. You have elected a superb team of New Democrats to Parliament. They are going to be doing remarkable things in the years to come to make this country better for us all. To young Canadians: All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future. And finally, to all Canadians: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one - a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. We can do our part to save the world's environment. We can restore our good name in the world. We can do all of these things because we finally have a party system at the national level where there are real choices; where your vote matters; where working for change can actually bring about change. In the months and years to come, New Democrats will put a compelling new alternative to you. My colleagues in our party are an impressive, committed team. Give them a careful hearing; consider the alternatives; and consider that we can be a better, fairer, more equal country by working together. Don't let them tell you it can't be done. My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we'll change the world. All my very best, Jack Layton Jack Layton: Notable Achievements Impacted Canadians

'Like some political Moses, Jack Layton led his people out of the wilderness, only to die within sight of his own Promised Land.' Jack Ward :The Canadian Press
Through three decades of public service, first as a councillor, then as Leader of Canada's New Democrats since 2003, Jack Layton worked at making changes to create a better lives for Canadians. Months after first taking his place in Parliament, Jack Layton successfully rewrote the 2005 federal budget. In place of $4.6-billion in corporate tax giveaways, Layton secured investments in: affordable housing, training, public transit, energy efficiency, development assistance and wage protection. Election 2008 returned Layton to Ottawa with an even stronger team.Layton's New Democrats held Harper to account: on the jobs and affordability crisis, on health care wait times, and on global warming. In May 2010, Jack Layton made history again. In passing Layton's 'Climate Change Accountability Act', the House of Commons became the world's first legislature to adopt science-based targets to cut climate-changing emissions— by 80% before 2050. For Jack Layton, leadership was all about teamwork. Systematically since 2003, he worked to build the strongest possible team — diverse, committed, national— to represent ordinary Canadians. By 2007, something special was happening: after a by-election landslide in Outremont, Layton welcomed Quebec's first New Democrat MP in a generation. Then, May 2, Jack Layton became the leader of the Official Opposition with about 4.5 million people cast ballots for the NDP, giving the party 103 seats — 59 from Quebec. Just a few weeks ago, Jack called a news conference disclosing he was suffering from another, unspecified cancer and needed to temporarily step down as party leader. Nycole Turmel, took over in the interim. John Ward of The Candian Press termed Jack Layton's political career very well drawing a parallel between the journey of Moses leading his people towards the promised land, only to glimpse it only from the horizon. In Deuteronomy 34 it is written that God took Moses to a high place and showed him the Promised Land in the distance...

What is Halal?

All foods and ingredients which are lawful to consume according to Islamic dietary laws, are called Halal; for example fruits, vegetables, and fish.
What is Haram?
Food products and ingredients which are prohibited for Muslims to consume are called Haram; for example pork and its by-products, blood, and alcoholic beverages.
What is Zabiha Slaughtered Meat?
Meat from cows, lamb, chickens and turkey are considered Zabiha if animals are slaughtered by a Muslim following Islamic slaughtering Sharia rules and procedures. Some Muslims also called it Halal meat.
